Great Oxendon Parish Council is a statutory body at the first tier of local government. The Parish Council operates at a level below the Daventry District Council.
It serves the electorate within its small rural community and is independently elected. It raises a precept – a form of council tax – from the local community.
Local councils work towards improving community well being and providing better services at a local level. Their activities fall into three main categories: representing the local community; delivering services to meet local needs; striving to improve quality of life and community well being.
Through an extensive range of discretionary powers local councils provide and maintain a variety of important and visible local services. It is elected to help on a number of issues such as being a planning consultee, street lighting and awarding grants to benefit the Great Oxendon community. Its priority for 2016/ 2017 is traffic calming. These existing powers were recently strengthened by powers contained in the Localism Act.
The Great Oxendon Parish Council normally meet at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month in the village hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend and there is an Open Forum where issues can be raised by residents.
